County Coordinator

Location: Redding, Ca + travel throughout Shasta County
Position Type: Part-Time

The Shasta County Fire Safe Council (SCFSC) is seeking candidates for a County Coordinator position. The primary goal of this position is to encourage and develop county-wide collaboration and coordination among wildfire mitigation organizations, to improve overall wildfire resiliency strategies and community preparedness. These goals will be accomplished by building relationships with existing wildfire mitigation organizations, connecting these groups with county-level emergency management officials and resources, collaborating on fire mitigation projects, sourcing and assisting with wildfire grant applications, supporting the Firewise program, and performing outreach and communication across the county.

The County Coordinator will work closely with Shasta County fire mitigation organizations including but not limited to: CAL FIRE, US Forest Service, Western Shasta Resource Conservation District (WSRCD), Firewise volunteers, private landowners seeking wildfire mitigation assistance, nonprofits involved in mitigation projects, and other applicable state and federal agencies.

Position duties:

  • Develop a census of all active wildfire mitigation organizations, community stakeholders, contact points, collaboration efforts, and related projects to identify project overlap, gaps, and redundancy. Identify, summarize, and report on local groups, grants, and projects within the county.
  • Develop relationships and host regular communications/meetings between existing wildfire mitigation organizations and county-level officials.
  • Analyze gaps in fire resiliency programs and emergency preparedness and provide recommendations to fill those gaps.
  • Provide input to and assist in the implementation of the County Wildfire Protection Plan.
  • Work alongside local CAL FIRE Unit to develop plans for collaborative activities based on locally appropriate resources.
  • Help community groups to collaborate with partners in the development and definition of wildfire prevention and preparedness projects.
  • Identify funding opportunities that benefit wildfire mitigation efforts and community outreach. Provide support on project development and grant submission as needed.
  • Coordinate and participate in community outreach events to support wildfire resiliency and emergency preparedness.
  • Coordinate and attend public and/or partner meetings. The coordinator will be expected to travel throughout Shasta County for meetings, landowner outreach activities and other field duties.
  • Oversee and collaborate with the SCFSC Outreach and Education Coordinator.  Provide guidance on social media and website content as needed.

Grant-specific Expectations:

This position is initially funded by a grant from the California Fire Safe Council (CFSC). Therefore, specific expectations are required in compliance with that grant:

  • Attend quarterly check-ins with appropriate CSFC staff member(s)
  • Participate in quarterly meetings with other County Coordinators as well as state/regional stakeholders and other interested county-wide wildfire mitigation groups.
  • Submit funding requests and quarterly reports to the CFSC.
  • Provide CFSC with a comprehensive final report at the close of grant term, including outcomes, successes, and recommendations.
  • Track all engagements with county contacts and groups.
  • Monitor budget and maintain grant-related files and materials.
  • Continue to contribute to the CFSC GIS Networking Portal. Participate in one CAL FIRE Qualified Entities Training to gain insights into home assessment requirements and support CAL FIRE in standardizing assessment practices.
  • Provide one county-level training with key stakeholders on the new Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) toolkits.

Expected Skills and Knowledge

The ideal candidate for the County Coordinator is someone with a background in community-level advocacy and demonstrated leadership skills, working with a broad range of individuals and organizations. The Candidate should have an ability to think strategically and creatively.

Three or more years actively working in the wildfire resiliency and/or emergency preparedness space, whether through local or countywide Fire Safe Councils, Resource Conservation Districts, or within a county level department or agency, is preferred.

Candidate should be:

  • Fully conversant with MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and have some basic GPS/GIS skills (training provided by CFSC).
  • Have the ability to work without close supervision and meet deadlines.
  • Be very comfortable speaking before small groups, giving presentations, guiding discussions, and leading meetings and training sessions.
  • Familiarity with grant-funded projects.
  • Have reliable transportation and a clean driving record.

This position is offered at 24-30 hours per week and is based out of Redding, with some of the work performed virtually (must have reliable internet access). Wages will be commensurate with experience (range starting at $30/hour). Funding for the position is secured through July 2026. Ongoing employment will be dependent on subsequent grant funding. The County Coordinator will be supervised by the Executive Director and at times receive direction from the Board of Directors Chair or designee.

Community Outreach and Education Coordinator

Overview

The Community Outreach and Education Coordinator is responsible for enhancing wildfire awareness, fire prevention education, and community engagement throughout Shasta County. This role supports the development of Firewise communities, manages digital communications, and creates educational materials that promote fire safety and resilience. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with experience in outreach, content creation, and community organizing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Firewise Community Support
    • Assist neighborhoods in achieving Firewise USA® recognition, coordinating efforts with local agencies and residents.
    • Provide educational materials on wildfire preparedness, defensible space, and home hardening strategies.
    • Develop and distribute materials to help communities understand and implement Firewise best practices.
  • Community Engagement & Education
    • Plan and execute outreach events, workshops, and presentations on wildfire safety.
    • Build relationships with local government agencies and residents.
    • Represent the Fire Safe Council at public meetings, fairs, and emergency preparedness events.
  • Digital Media & Communications
    • Maintain and update the Fire Safe Council’s website with relevant news, events, and resources.
    • Manage social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to engage the community and promote fire resilience.
    • Develop fire prevention flyers, and online resources tailored to Shasta County’s fire risks.
    • Create monthly newsletters and email campaigns to share fire safety updates and community success stories.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 2-5 years professional work experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and ability to balance multiple projects.
  • Must have basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Experience updating/maintaining websites, social media, and digital outreach campaigns. Experience with Canva or similar platforms if preferred.
  • Some knowledge of wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness (or willingness to learn).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse community groups.
  • Must feel comfortable speaking and presenting in small public meeting settings.
  • Must have the ability to work remotely (internet access), be organized, and personable.
  • The coordinator will be expected to travel throughout Shasta County for meetings, outreach activities, and other field duties. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in community organizing, public relations, education.
  • Familiarity with website platforms like WordPress or Wix.
  • Previous experience working with fire safety initiatives, emergency response programs, or natural resource management.
  • Experience with grants is beneficial.

Compensation & Benefits

This position is offered at 20 hours per week and is based out of Redding, with some of the work performed virtually (must have reliable internet access). Wages will be commensurate with experience (range starting at $25/hour).
